Juice Cleanse : The Fix Cold Pressed Juice

April 29, 2014

Disclaimer: I received a three day juice cleanse free of charge. All opinions are however my own.

For the past few months, the lovely couple Jovan and Lucianne behind The Fix: Cold Pressed Juice have been making waves around Canberra. After their personal experience of a close call with cancer, Jovan and Lucianne learned a lot about the healing power of plant-based nutrition and became convinced that there is a place for cold pressed juice in everyone’s life and hence The Fix was born. Currently you can get a taste of The Fix by visiting the cafes and other venues like yoga studios listed on the website or you can order online where you have the option to order juices of your choice or go all out and commit to a one to five day juice cleanse.

Ever since I had first read about The Fix I had been intrigued about experiencing a juice cleanse so I was thrilled when Jovan and Lucianne offered me a chance to try a cleanse of my choice.

What’s cold pressing all about?
“Regular (centrifugal) juicers use internal blades to extract juice, and spin up to 30,000 revs per minute. This pumps air through produce, incurring premature oxidisation. The blades shred fruit and vegetables into tiny particles exposing them to air, compromising the living enzymes as they separate. Cold press juicers extract juice from produce using a gentle crushing and squeezing action. This ensures that the vital enzymes, nutrients and minerals stay intact. This extraction method is still regarded as the best in the world. In fact, independent research shows that a cold press juicer retains double the nutrients to its centrifugal counterparts. This means cold pressing keep the good stuff in there for longer” – From The Fix

Why cleanse?

“Cleansing is a great way to give your body a holiday, increase energy levels, strengthen the immune system, balance hormones and pack a powerful punch of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. The Fix cleanse is specifically designed to give your body just the right amount of nutrients which are easily absorbed into the blood stream because there is no extra processing your body has to do. The cleanse will support your body in the detox process as the juices will leave your body feel satiated as you go about your daily routine” – From The Fix

The Fix offers three different cleanses, each lasting from one to five days. That’s a lot of decision making. How did I select my cleanse?

This was the hardest decision I had to make. If you are a complete novice to a juice cleanse or if your average diet isn’t particularly healthy, stick with the Noobie cleanse of two to three days. This cleanse has less of the grassy/green stuff so it won’t be too much of a shock to your system.

If you are very fit and healthy with a well balanced diet then go for the Zen cleanse which is almost entirely green. Initially I was of the mind set of go hard or go home and had my heart set on a five day Zen cleanse. But after having a chat with Lucianne I changed my mind as I didn’t want to push myself too hard and not end up with a positive cleansing experience. So I decided on a three day 9 to Fiver

Three days was just perfect for me; any less and I wouldn’t have felt like I was getting the full cleansing experience but I think I would’ve struggled to keep it up for more than three days. Surprisingly I ended up enjoying the green juices a lot more (more on that coming up) so next time I will go for a three day Zen cleanse (yes, I’m already thinking about a next time!).

But if you are particularly fit and healthy there should be nothing to stop you from going the full distance of a five day cleanse. For example, a friend of mine who is a new mum and a very fit yogi, signed up for a five day Zen cleanse and enjoyed every minute of it!

The juices were delivered to my door on the afternoon before I started my cleanse. The 24 juices were packed into four boxes, clearly marked Day 1 Juice 1 to Day 3 Juice 8 leaving no room for confusion.

Did I do anything special to prepare for the cleanse?

I did. I generally eat fairly healthy and try to follow an 80-20 semi-paleo lifestyle; 80% or more of all my meals per week contain no grains, refined sugar or processed food but I’m not restrictive on dairy, caffeine and a glass of wine or two generally. But the week leading up to the cleanse I went 100% paleo. I cut out all grain, dairy, sugar, processed food, caffeine and alcohol out for ten days. It’s not a requirement to go all out like I did before a cleanse but they do recommend that you ease off on caffeine, alcohol, refined sugar, refined starches, dairy, meat and poultry in order to help kick start the detox process.

How do the juices taste?

Considering each 375ml bottle of juice (or liquid sunshine as The Fix calls it) has 790g cold pressed fruit and veg, healthy tasting is how I’d describe them. My top three flavours in order were All Hale Kale (kale, cucumber, parsley and apple), Cabadge of Honour (cabbage, pears and lemon) and Slim Leafy (cos lettuce, celery, spinach and apple). I was actually a little surprised that I loved the green juices as much as I did. I found the Tumeric and Zingiber Hot Spice took some getting used to due to their intense spicy tastes. In all honesty, all six juices were delicious but don’t expect them to taste like the sugary cartons of juices you get from the super market. Obviously.

Was I starving for three days?

Definitely not. On the first day I didn’t even think about food as I was too excited about finding out what each of the juices would taste like (I’m easily amused like that). On the first night of the cleanse I got an email from lovely Lucianne checking up on me and reminding me that the cleanse is not a challenge or a test and to eat some raw fruit, veg or nuts if I get hungry. By mid afternoon on day two and three I felt hungry and I had a banana or a handful of almonds (more on that in the next section). That was enough to keep me going and I was very far from starving. Oh and the juices come with these cute and personal hand written notes to keep you motivated and to put a smile on your face. It’s the small things that matter…

How did I feel during the cleanse?

I’ll break this down day by day.

Day 1
I started off really strong and had downed four juices by mid afternoon but then started feeling really full of liquid. The fact that I went to the gym at lunch time and drank lots of water probably didn’t help either. I could only get through seven juices on day one; no matter how much I wanted to drink that last bottle I just couldn’t get any more liquid in me. I felt great all day and not the slightest bit hungry. I did have to go to the toilet more often than usual… all that liquid and fibre… (too much information?)
Day 2
I woke up feeling great and weirdly lean; my stomach felt super flat (or was it my imagination?). By about juice three my stomach started feeling very unsettled and was making growling noises. Also I ummm had the runs. By 3pm I actually felt hungry so I had 2 medium bananas. After this my stomach settled down and I was able to finish all 8 juices and go to bed without feeling hungry.
Day 3

Again I woke up feeling great. My stomach felt fine and I wasn’t hungry at all till about 6pm when I had a banana and a handful almonds. By the end of the day I may have been feeling a little smug because I wasn’t hungry, I was in high spirits and felt great.

That’s me towards the end of day three. I liked All Hale Kale so much I started dressing like it!

How were my energy levels during the cleanse?
Perfectly normal. I didn’t feel tired or lethargic. I only went to the gym once during the three days, not because I was tired but because it was the long weekend and I preferred to stay on the couch with a marathon of New Girl. I chose to do the cleanse during the weekend because this suited my lifestyle. On an average working day when I’m seeing 40 patients at work, drinking a bottle of juice every two hours and running to the toilet every 20 minutes isn’t an option for me.

What was the hardest part about the cleanse?
Consuming all that liquid was the hardest part for me. The Fix recommends that you drink the juices two hours apart in order for your body to get the right amount of nutrients at appropriate intervals. I found it really hard to drink a bottle of juice in several gulps and it would sometimes take me half an hour of sipping to get through one juice. The cold weather makes gulping a juice straight out of the fridge a little difficult plus some of the juices have intense flavours which doesn’t help with fast drinking. And on top of the juices you are supposed to be drinking eight glasses of water per day to stay hydrated and to help with eliminating toxins. So to me it felt like I was forever drinking, going to the toilet, going to the fridge, opening another juice and repeating the process.

Did I miss eating?
More than food itself I missed the social aspect of eating. If you know me, you probably know that my life revolves around food and socialising so for three days I suffered from a bit of FOMO because my social life was a bit non-existent.

And then there was the physical act of eating that I missed a little bit. Even though the juices kept me physically full, by end of day three I was really looking forward to chewing on something that was more than a handful of nuts and eating something from a plate and not a bottle.

But I wasn’t craving anything unhealthy at all. I was dreaming of a nice grilled piece of salmon with a side of greens. Weird, I know. My dreams are generally more exciting than this.

How did I feel after the cleanse?

Fantastic! It’s now been four days since I finished the cleanse. My skin looks and feels better, I feel less bloated than I generally do. I feel leaner and stronger in general. The best side effect is that I crave healthy food! I don’t even give a second thought to unhealthy “treats” or “cheat meals”.

The Fix informs that easing out of the cleanse is just as important as the cleansing process itself. They suggest small portions of meals consisting mainly of raw fruits and vegetables as well as salads and soups in the days immediately following the cleanse. The thing I’ve been craving every day is a green smoothie. I’ve been downing those babies like they are going out of fashion!

What next for me?

I want to keep feeling like this all the time. The Fix cleanse has given me a much needed health boost. I’ve been a little lazy with my semi paleo life style and I’m determined to stick to my clean eating habits and get back to a healthier version of me. I’m also very keen to do a three day Zen cleanse, after chatting with The Fix about how long one should leave between cleanses of course.
