The Champagne Dame in Canberra + Giveaway

May 3, 2015

Ever since I was old enough to drink (and appreciate what I was drinking) I’ve loved champagne. I mean really, how could I call myself “le bon vivant” and not love champagne, right? And it goes without saying that I’m referring here to the real deal from the beautiful Champagne region of France. There’s just something luxurious about this wine- whether it’s from a prestigious well known champagne house or a little known family estate, the celebratory and indulgent feeling one gets when sipping those bubbles is really something special. If I could drop everything, move to Champagne, live in a little French cottage surrounded by champagne houses I think that would be all my dreams coming true. And then I heard about Kyla Kirkpatrick, aka The Champagne Dame, who did just that and now living the champagne dream!

I caught up with Kyla earlier this week, ahead of her upcoming Madames and Maisons Champagne Masterclass scheduled for May 23rd in Canberra Centre.

Ten years ago Kyla put her corporate career on hold  to follow her passion for food and wine and opened a wine bar, which was the start of her love affair with Champagne. According to Kyla, “despite what most people may think, it wasn’t the bubbles themselves that triggered my interest in champagne but rather the history of it. I recall reading an article on Napoléon Bonaparte and being intrigued by his connection to Champagne and his friendship with Jean-Remy Moët. Several years of devouring literature on the fascinating history of champagne later, I decided to take this obsession to the next level and moved to France to further my champagne education”.

This is where she learnt about unique grape varieties, traditional methods of champagne production, satisfied her thirst for the history of the wine and of course had the opportunity to taste some of the world’s most beautiful and rare champagnes. While there, Kyla was also introduced to a side of champagne that is rarely witnessed by the rest of the world- a glimpse into the life of Champagne families who have passed skills, passion and expertise from one generation to another. Hearing about their unique lifestyles producing one of the world’s most desired products further fuelled Kyla’s love of champagne.

Kyla travels to Champagne many times a year and has had some incredible experiences while working with the Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy Group which owns some of the most powerful champagne brands in the world including Moët and Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Dom Perignon and the grand daddy of champagne Krug.

All of these experiences have made The Champagne Dame what she is today- a true champagne expert and an ambassador. Kyla has shared her wealth of knowledge through masterclasses and workshops for many years and always impresses her audience with her charisma, colourful presenting style and stories of champagne’s past and present.

The Champagne Dame returns to Canberra in May for a Madames and Maisons Champagne Masterclass which tells the story of some of the most powerful and inspirational women of Champagne. According to Kyla, “this masterclass will be a journey backwards in time to discover the hard work and innovation of some incredible women who helped make champagne what it is today. From the pioneering Madame Clicquot who’s behind champagne becoming a clear liquid to the innovative Madame Pommery who came up with the dry, Brut style Champagne to the charismatic Madame Lily Bollinger who helped create empires, women have been instrumental in the history of Champagne”.

In a two hour masterclass Kyla will educate and entertain her guests with stories of the roles played by some of these incredible women. Of course no masterclass would be complete without offering the opportunity to taste, so guests will sip their way through five fabulous Champagnes accompanied by canapés as The Champagne Dame explores their rich history.

This looks like such fabulous fun.

I would love to win this competition not for myself but for my wonderful mother in law and her best friend. I have just given birth to a beautiful baby girl and my mother in law has been such a phenomenal support. She has kept my husband and I so well fed and has taken the best care of us. She and her BFF of many years enjoy trying new champagnes and I’d love to treat them both!

    All the best x

  • Alison

Id love to take one of my best friends Brooke Buttler. It’s her 40th next wk & her hubby’s been posted overseas on deployment and has been since b4 Christmas. She loves her bubbles and could do with a girly afternoon break away from her 4 kids.

  • David

I would love to take my beautiful wife who i will have been married to for 20 years this year after getting married at 22. We both love to drink a nice glass of bubbles.

  • Sophia

As I get older, I find it harder and harder to make new friends but recently I have met a lovely new friend and what better way than to break the ice and cement a friendship than with Champagne! I can’t think of a more delightful experience to share with this new friend than a masterclass with Kyla Kirkpatrick, The Champagne Dame herself.

  • Diana

I would take my flatmate. He broke his leg on my Birthday Sunday and he needs some champagne cheer!

  • Cheney

Both my lovely friend Greta and I are just starting to spread our wings in our chosen careers, so I think we’d both benefit from some inspiration from the fabulous and innovation women of Champagne. It’d also be nice to pick up some more sophisticated adjectives with which to describe our favourite tipple besides, “Mmm, bubbly!”.

  • Erin

Oui oui, sils vous plait! My husband and I are celebrating our 12th anniversary (our young ‘going out’ anniversary) on that day – it would a wonderful way to celebrate!

  • Cynth

I would love to take my mum, as I haven’t done anything for her for Mother’s Day. We’ve also never been to a high tea event before. My mum and I have had a rough few years, and our relationship hasn’t always been the best, so it would be lovely to spend some time with her.

  • Div

I would love to take my sister! We’ve both been working really hard, and it’s difficult to find time to spend with each other, so this would be perfect! I have composed a short poem for the occasion:

I love a flute of fizzles
    O lovely bubbly, je t’aime!
    Whether sunshine or drizzles,
I’d love to meet the Champagne Dame

  • Manj

I would love to win this for my sister and my mum. My mum is a wonderful lady who doesn’t usually drink but she loves an occasional glass of bubbly. Both my my mum and sister (Cynth)are wonderful ladies who need to be treated to something special.
